Below I have outlined the tips and tricks that have worked for me when designing rooms in my home.
*Start with the sofa. I suggest going with a solid neutral color. I tend to lean towards cream or gray sofas, but it’s totally up to you. Some of my favorites are linked below. I swear by Crate & Barrel sofas. They are truly quality investment pieces. We currently own and LOVE the Verano sofa. We’ve had two for over 6 years and they still look brand new!
*Choose neutral accent furniture items. Think woods and whites. You want to choose pieces that will NOT limit your decor choices.

*Think about the color scheme you want to infuse into the room. Infuse it with an area rug, curtains, and throw pillows. If you want to add a pattern/design – choose ONLY ONE of those items to showcase that design.
For example, in my family room, I chose my area rug as the “pattern/design” item. Therefore, I kept my curtains and pillows SOLID in color.
To show you an example of this tip in action – let’s use my family room color scheme as a guide. I chose the colors blue, taupe, gray and ivory.
Below are some area rugs that incorporate that color scheme nicely.
Notice: all of these area rugs incorporate a PATTERN – therefore the pillows and curtains should NOT.
*Now, let’s look at some pillow options. You can stick with one color, or incorporate multiple colors. I chose to use 2 colors, but multiple fabrics/textures. On each sofa I have 3 gray (looks taupe) and 2 ivory throw pillows. The textures vary from linen, velvet, and a viscose/cotton blend. I’ve added samples of the pillows below.
*When choosing your drapery, again you want to keep the color neutral and in the same family as the pillows. For this space I could have chosen gray or a cream/ivory. I decided on cream to match my white walls. I’m absolutely IN LOVE with these curtains (below). They hang perfectly and look so luxurious. Bonus: they are BLACKOUT!
Once you have the furniture, area rug, curtains, and pillows…you’re on your way to a fabulous space!
I like to think of this as the “foundation” of the room. Now is the fun part: adding in decor items to really make the space your own!
